Women's Voices 2010
Monday, March 15, 2010
Hundreds of Orange County Jewish women – mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters and friends gather each year at the Hyatt Regency Irvine for the annual Women's Voices Luncheon presented by Women’s Philanthropy of Jewish Federation. Women's Voices celebrates the individual and collective power of Orange County women making a commitment to build and strengthen Jewish life at home and abroad, and pays tribute to a woman of distinction in our community in bestowing the Anne Entin Woman of the Year Award. Since the inception of Women’s Philanthropy, women in Orange County have raised millions of dollars to support our local Jewish schools and agencies, and to help Jews in distress in Israel and 60 countries around the world. Women’s Philanthropy provides a place for every woman to express her commitment to the Jewish values of tzedakah (social justice) and tikkun olam (repairing the world).
Women's Voices 2010 Keynote Speaker
Jamie McCourt
When Jamie and Frank McCourt purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004, Jamie McCourt became the highest ranking woman in Major League Baseball. She served as the team’s Vice Chairman in 2004, its President in 2005 and became CEO in 2009. A conscience-driven business leader and attorney, she has brought the Dodgers team and fan experience to new levels of excellence. She believes in the power of the game she’s loved since childhood to unify families, connect generations, and bring people together from all walks of life.
Born Jamie Luskin in Baltimore, into a family she describes as ardently Zionist, she loved Hebrew school and reminisces proudly about her grandfather from Minsk who opened a kosher food market in his new country. As a child, Jamie was a multitasker with a passion for sports and education. She excelled in school, earning her B.S. in French from Georgetown University, her J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law, and her MBA from MIT/Sloan, with semesters at the Hebrew University and the Sorbonne.
Today, Jamie McCourt is a businesswoman, academic and philanthropist. She teaches “The Pursuit of Leadership: A Female Perspective,” at the UCLA Anderson School of Management; serves on the Boards of UCLA/Anderson, MIT/Sloan and USC; and has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. A highlight of her fifth trip to Israel last July was the privilege of throwing the first pitch at the 18thMaccabiah baseball tournament in Tel Aviv. At the heart of her community spirit is a passion for education. “I believe in education’s ability to empower,” she says. “Whether it is to gain employment, achieve advancement, or to address the fundamental need to use your voice, education is the great equalizer.”
